19 April 2022  Allotments Consultation

Sennen Parish Council invites feedback regarding the provision of allotments in the Parish.

The provision of new sites is covered by two distinct bodies of law: the various ‘Allotment Acts’ dating back over a century which are specific to this activity, and planning law, together with its implementation through local planning policies.

Where it is found that there is sufficient demand for them, local authorities have a mandatory obligation to provide allotment provision under Section 23 of the 1908 Small Holdings and Allotments Act.  "Sufficient demand" is classed as the Parish Council receiving six or more formal letters of request from people that are either on the electoral roll or are registered council tax payers in the Parish.

There is no timescale attached to this process. Upon determining there to be sufficient demand, the Parish Council would then take steps to ensure an appropriate strategy is in place to meet the demand.  To provide context, the National Allotment Society recommends that authorities should supply 20 plots (or 0.5 hectare) per 1,000 households.

Please email formal letters of request to feedback.sennenpc@gmail.com or by post/hand to the Acting Clerk c/o Trelevan, Mayon Green, Sennen, TR19 7AW

10 April 2022  Sennen Parish Citizen and Junior Citizen Award

This year Sennen Parish Council has decided to introduce a Sennen Parish Citizen and Junior Citizen Award. The junior age will be under 16 and presentations will take place on Feast Sunday.  Nominations are invited from Parishioners and groups to be forwarded to the Parish clerk via email, letter or telephone by 15 September 2022.

These awards are to recognise those people in the Parish that give freely of their time and skills to benefit others. For example nominations can be based on volunteering, fund raising, or by simply helping friends or neighbours. This is not a full list and all will be considered.

The nominees and those individuals and groups benefiting must reside in Sennen Parish. Please start nominating those people who make Sennen a wonderful place to live.

6 Apr 2022   Public Toilet update

We are pleased to announce that we have refurbished the unisex toilet block in the beach carpark ready for the Easter holidays.  Works have included internal and external power washing, painting throughout, leak fixing, fixtures and fittings refurb, plumbing and electrical checks and new signage.

The toilets were devolved to the Parish Council in 2016 under an informal agreement with Cornwall Council.  Since that time around 50%  the local portion of the council tax (Parish precept) has paid for their running costs alone. The precept was raised several years ago specifically to meet increasing toilet costs.

Whilst we wait for an agreement between Cornwall Council and the car park leaseholder in order to transfer the toilet lease to the parish, it is difficult for us to allocate extra money to improve the facilities. We have done everything that we can to maintain community access to the toilets in the cove, however we have now had to reduce the number of facilities available in order to control the significant costs.

Going forward our aim is to make sure that the toilets are maintained to the best possible standard and that the running costs are brought under control.

February 2022  New Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) to be installed

Sennen Parish Council has agreed to purchase a second Vehicle Activated Sign.  This is a portable sign which will initially be situated on the existing pole opposite the Spar shop at Mayon, and will capture eastbound vehicle speeds coming from Sennen Churchtown.

Speed data captured by the sign will allow the Council to gather information in support of further safety measures at different sites around the village.

The Parish Council has identified two further potential sites for poles and is working towards ensuring their installation in the near future, so as to allow regular movement of the portable sign around vehicle speeding hot spots in the village.

February 2022   Grants awarded to local groups

The Parish Council has awarded a grant to Sennen School to assist in the second phase of improvements to the play area which is undergoing a complete refurbishment. The play area not only serves the school but the whole community outside of school hours and we hope the new facilities will be enjoyed by many.

Sennen Pre-School has also benefitted from funding from the Parish Council's Section 137 grant program to help them move forward with the building of a much needed and long awaited new facility in Sennen.
